Earnings Spotlight: Square (SQ) – Just like the rest of the market, Square has gone through a roller-coaster ride in 2018. But it has a lot more to show for it – roughly 24% gains year-to-date versus a 1% advance for the S&P 500. The next test for the payment-technology company comes after the bell on Feb. 27, when it reports earnings for the fourth quarter. It should be an interesting one, given that analysts are projecting a 41.1% drop in revenues to $266.26 million, but also expect the company to flip from a 4-cent loss to a 7-cent profit. However, one reason for caution in SQ extends beyond Tuesday’s report. BTIG analyst Mark Palmer recently warned investors about Square’s connection with Bitcoin, as its Cash app can be used to buy and sell the digital currency. “Square’s stock has become tethered to the movements of a volatile cryptocurrency – a live-with-it, die-with-it relationship that we do not believe is conducive to the sustenance of a lofty multiple.”

FRIDAY

Earnings Spotlight: J.C. Penney (JCP) – Long-term, mall retailer J.C. Penney is having a miserable run of things, with years of plunging revenues and profits taking their toll on the stock. At around just $4 per share, JCP is worth less than a quarter of what it was back in 2013. That said, the retailer is enjoying a market-beating 17% recovery in 2018, and will try to maintain the momentum with its Friday morning announcement of quarterly earnings. Analysts expect mixed results, with sales actually up 2.1% year-over-year, but a 26.6% drop on the bottom line. Interestingly, billionaire David Einhorn’s Greenlight Capital recently disclosed a 6.4 million-share position in JCP made in Q4 2017.

Earnings Spotlight: JD.com (JD) – Chinese e-commerce site JD.com continues to be a fountain of growth, up 56% in the past 12 months and up 10% year-to-date. The company will try to justify those gains, and spark more of the same, with a Friday morning report in which Wall Street’s pros expect most metrics to be up. Analysts peg revenue growth at 35.2% to $17.1 billion, and earnings should grow by a penny per share to 7 cents. MKM Partners’ Rob Sanderson sees Q4 earnings as particularly important in determining the impact third parties have on margins, saying, “We think that the clean Q3 should ease competitive concerns somewhat, but this will still be an overhang on the stock until Q4 dynamics and impact to the financials are better understood.”
